Born at Beuthen in Upper Silesia, he was the last German bishop of Ermland and was appointed by Pius XII as bishop for the expelled Germans after the Second World War.

Why that counted as sanctity
His beatification process was opened on 4 May 2003 at the Ermland pilgrimage in Werl by Cardinal Joachim Meisner of Cologne and Archbishop Edmund Piszcz of Olsztyn, with the Ermland visitator Msgr Lothar Schlegel of Münster. The Kaller foundation, which acts for the cause, says the diocesan process on his virtues closed in 2013 at the Kevelaer pilgrimage; the Hagiography Circle record gives 17 October 2010.
