Who they were
At Tebessa in Numidia, in present-day Algeria, Saint Maximilian, martyr, who, son of the veteran Victor and himself enlisted in the army, answered the proconsul Dion that it was not lawful for a Christian believer to serve in the army and, having refused to take the military oath, was put to death by the sword.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
