Who they were
Melito, Bishop of Sardis in the second century, was one of the great authorities of the Church in Asia; Polycrates says his whole life was in the Holy Spirit, and many thought him a prophet.
About 172 he wrote an Apology asking Emperor Marcus Aurelius to end the persecution of Christians. Most of his many writings are lost.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

A bishop who defended the Christians before the emperor.
