Who they were
Mercedes de Jesús Molina y Ayala was born at Baba, Ecuador, on 24 September 1828 and later moved to Guayaquil. After a serious fall from a horse she turned to a life of prayer and penance, cared for orphaned and abandoned girls, and worked alongside the Jesuits in their missions.
At Riobamba on 14 April 1873 she took vows before the bishop and founded the Sisters of Saint Mariana of Jesus, to care for orphan girls, shelter women leaving prostitution and assist prisoners. She died in Riobamba on 12 June 1883, and John Paul II beatified her at Guayaquil on 1 February 1985.
