Miltiades

Who they were

Miltiades, a native of Africa, was elected Pope in 310 or 311 after a long vacancy caused by the controversy over the lapsed, and died on 10 or 11 January 314. In his time Constantine's victory and the Edict of Milan brought freedom to the Church. At the emperor's request he presided at the Roman synod of 313 on the Donatist dispute.

There was never a formal cause: Miltiades has been honoured as a saint since the early Church.

Why that counted as sanctity

Miltiades led the Church of Rome from the last persecution into its first freedom, and worked for unity in Africa.
