Who they were
At Carthage, in present-day Tunisia, the anniversary of the death of the holy Scillitan martyrs Speratus, Narzalus, Cittinus, Veturius, Felix, Aquilinus, Laetantius, Januaria, Generosa, Vestia, Donata and Secunda, who by order of the proconsul Saturninus were, after a first confession of faith in Christ, thrown into prison; brought in chains the following day, they firmly confessed that they were Christians and, on refusing to honour the emperor as a god, were condemned to death: all of them kneeling down at the place of execution, they were beheaded with a sword while they gave thanks to God.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
The Roman Martyrology remembers him on 17 July as one of the Scillitan martyrs, beheaded at Carthage under the proconsul Saturninus after refusing to honour the emperor as a god.
