Nicholas Garlick

Who they were

Nicholas Garlick, a schoolmaster at Tideswell, had such a holy influence on his pupils that three went with him to Reims, one to become a martyr. He was ordained and returned to England in 1583.

Exiled in 1585, he came back and was arrested at Padley with Robert Ludlam. In Derby gaol they strengthened a wavering fellow priest. He was executed at Derby on 24 July 1588.

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.

Why that counted as sanctity

A schoolmaster-priest who led others to God and died for the Faith.
