Nicolas Steno
Pioneer in anatomy and geology, bishop (1638–1686)

Who they were
Niels Stensen was born into a wealthy Lutheran family; his father was a court goldsmith, and studied medicine at Copenhagen, Rostock and Amsterdam, where he discovered the parotid duct still named after him. He was one of the most eminent natural scientists of his time.
Embracing the Catholic faith, he was ordained in Florence in 1675 and two years later made a bishop; Innocent XI sent him as vicar apostolic to largely Lutheran northern Germany, and he served as bishop at Münster and Paderborn. Dying with no Catholic priest to hear his confession, he confessed his sins aloud before all.
