Nicolò Rusca

Who they were
Nicolò Rusca was born at Bedano in Ticino in April 1563 and was formed at the Helvetic College in Milan under St Charles Borromeo. In 1590 he became archpriest of Sondrio, in a time of conflict between Catholics and Reformed and of decline in church institutions.
A priest of deep learning and generous pastoral care, he led the Catholics of Sondrio and the whole Valtellina with balance and moderation, but became the innocent victim of political and religious factions. Rejecting all the false charges against him, he was tortured and killed in hatred of the faith in 1618.
