Nikolaus Gross
German resistance fighter (1898–1945)

Who they were
Nikolaus Gross was born on 30 September 1898 at Niederwenigern near Essen, son of a colliery blacksmith. He worked in a rolling mill, as a labourer and then for five years as a coal miner underground, educating himself in his little free time.
A husband, father and active in Catholic social work, he opposed by every means a godless regime hostile to human dignity and the faith, so as not to act against God's commandments. Imprisoned, he was hanged in 1945; the prison chaplain saw his face 'already lit by the splendour that was about to receive him'.
