Who they were
Nuno Álvares Pereira was born in Portugal on 24 June 1360, probably at Cernache do Bonjardim, the natural son of a Hospitaller knight, legitimised by royal decree and raised as a knight. He married, and his daughter Beatriz married Afonso, first Duke of Braganza.
When King Fernando died without a male heir in 1383, Nuno became the commander of the armed forces of the kingdom for João I against Castile. Later, received as an oblate of the Carmelites, he lived a poor life hidden in Christ.
