A Jesuit who taught in Rome before returning to Ecuador, he became archbishop of Quito and was created cardinal. Santi e Beati gives his birth date as 22 May 1903, against the 23 May recorded by the Hagiography Circle.

Archbishop Fausto Trávez issued the decree opening the study of his cause on 21 February 2013 and the nihil obstat followed on 11 December 2015.
