Who they were
At Córdoba in Andalusia in Spain, Saint Paul, deacon and martyr, who, taught by the example and the word of Saint Sisenandus, was not afraid to rebuke the emptiness of their worship before the princes and the authorities of the Moors, and was killed for confessing Christ as true God.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
The Roman Martyrology remembers him on 20 July as a deacon of Córdoba who rebuked the Moorish rulers for the emptiness of their worship and was killed for confessing Christ as true God.
