Who they were
Pauline-Marie Jaricot was born in Lyon on 22 July 1799. Having heard about the work of missionaries since childhood, she decided as a young woman to give herself to supporting the Church's mission. In 1822 the first council of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith met, and it was approved the next year; she also founded the Living Rosary.
She died in poverty in Lyon on 9 January 1862.
The miracles
A three-year-old girl — Nice, France — 2012
A little girl of about three choked on a piece of food and was without oxygen for about thirty minutes; her heart stopped. She was resuscitated and reached hospital alive but in a vegetative coma, and over the following months doctors repeatedly told her parents she would never walk or speak. The mother of one of her school friends, a member of the Living Rosary who was there when it happened, began at once to pray to Pauline Jaricot and asked others to join her. The child recovered; the Vatican's medical commission found the healing rapid, perfect, lasting and scientifically inexplicable.
Why that counted as sanctity
The case of a three-year-old girl was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle on 26 May 2020, opening the way to beatification.
