Who they were
Paulinus, born near Cividale, became master of its school and was invited by Charlemagne to his court as royal master of grammar, among the leading scholars of the age.
Made Patriarch of Aquileia in 787, he took a leading part in the Church affairs of his day and wrote hymns for the feasts. He died in 802, revered as a saint.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
