Who they were
Pedro Asúa Mendía was born at Balmaseda, Biscay, on 30 August 1890, studied with the Jesuits at Orduña and from 1904 architecture in Madrid; in 1915 he became architect to the diocese of Vitoria. He was ordained on 14 June 1924.
Humble and austere, he preached the Gospel by holiness of life, catechesis and care for the poor. As the social climate turned violent he prepared himself for martyrdom; arrested, tortured and killed in 1936 for his fidelity to the Lord and the Church, he died forgiving his enemies.
