Pedro Esqueda Ramírez
Mexican saint. Martyred priest
Feast: 22 November (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Pedro Esqueda Ramírez was born at San Juan de los Lagos on 29 April 1887 and served there as curate. He gave himself with passion to teaching children the faith, founding study centres and a school for catechists.
During the persecution he organised perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament among families. Imprisoned, he was beaten so hard that his face was cut open. He was one of the 25 martyrs of the Mexican persecution, led by St Cristóbal Magallanes, most of them priests killed for exercising their ministry.
The miracles
As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.
Why that counted as sanctity
A priest who gave his life to teaching children the faith.
