Peter Chrysologus

Who they were

Peter was born around 380 at Imola, where Bishop Cornelius, 'my father, who begot me through the Gospel', formed him and ordained him. In 424 he became bishop of Ravenna and was such a fine preacher that he was called 'Chrysologus', 'golden word'.

He strengthened the faith of his people, built churches and monasteries and taught tirelessly, marvelling at God's goodness: 'O man, why do you think so little of yourself when you are so precious to God?' He died on 30 July between 451 and 458.

The miracles

There was never a formal cause: Peter has been honoured as a saint since his death. He was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1729.

Why that counted as sanctity

Peter Chrysologus preached the dignity of the human person before God and spent himself teaching and building up his flock.
