Peter Donders
Dutch Roman Catholic missionary (1809-1887)

Who they were
Peter Donders, born at Tilburg in 1807, longed to be a priest but had to work in a factory, then as a college servant, before a benefactor paid for his studies. Ordained in 1840, he went to Dutch Guiana.
He baptised 1,200 slaves on the plantations and worked heroically in the epidemic of 1851. From 1855 he ministered for nearly thirty-two years to 600 lepers at Batavia, studying music to cheer them, and joined the Redemptorists in 1867. He died among them on 14 January 1887.
The miracles
The Catholic Encyclopedia records that his cause of beatification had been placed before the Congregation of Rites.
