Peter the Venerable
French abbot and saint
Feast: 25 December (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Peter, offered to God as a child by his mother, Blessed Raingarde, was professed at seventeen and at thirty was elected Abbot of Cluny, with some 2,000 houses. He reformed the order and wrote its rules, one of the most complete codes of religious life.
He met St Bernard's criticisms with firmness and meekness, and Bernard was the first to call him 'Venerable'. He sheltered Peter Abelard and reconciled him to the Church. He died on Christmas Day 1156 after preaching on the mystery of the feast.
The miracles
Honoured as a saint by the people and his order, he was never canonised; Pope Pius IX confirmed the honour paid to him in 1862.
