Philip of Heraclea
4th-century Christian martyr
Feast: 22 October (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
At Edirne in Thrace, also in Turkey, the holy martyrs Philip, bishop of Marmara Ereğlisi, and Hermes, deacon: the first, at the beginning of the persecution of the emperor Diocletian, had been ordered to close the church and hand over all the sacred vessels and books it held; and having answered the governor Justin that it was not lawful for him to hand over what was asked nor for the governor to take it, after suffering prison and scourging he was burned at the stake together with the deacon.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
The Roman Martyrology remembers him on 22 October as a bishop who refused to hand over his church's sacred vessels and books under Diocletian and was burned at the stake.
