Philomenus of Ankara

Who they were

At Ankara in Galatia, in present-day Turkey, Saint Philomenus, martyr, who is said to have brought his martyrdom to completion during the persecution of the emperor Aurelian, under the governor Felix, thrown into the fire and then pierced with nails in his hands, his feet and his head.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

Why that counted as sanctity

The Roman Martyrology remembers him on 29 November as a martyr at Ankara in Galatia who is said to have been thrown into the fire and pierced with nails in his hands, his feet and his head under the governor Felix.
