Pierre de Castelnau

Who they were
Pierre de Castelnau was born in the Diocese of Montpellier and became Archdeacon of Maguelonne. In 1199 Pope Innocent III sent him with two Cistercians as papal legate to work for the conversion of the Albigensians, and about 1202 he himself took the Cistercian habit at Fontfroide, near Narbonne.
Confirmed as papal legate, he laboured tirelessly, strengthening those untouched by the heresy, gently winning back those who showed good will and censuring the obstinate. While trying to reconcile Raymond, Count of Toulouse, he was run through with a lance on the count's orders, and as he fell he cried, 'May God forgive you as I do.' He died on 15 January 1208 and is honoured as a martyr.
