Skarga was a Jesuit preacher at the court of Sigismund III Vasa, first rector of Vilnius University and founder of the Brotherhood of Mercy.

Why that counted as sanctity
The Archdiocese of Kraków names Piotr Skarga a Servant of God; the Polish Jesuits report that after a favourable opinion from the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in October 2014, Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz formally opened the beatification and canonisation process on 8 December 2014 in the chapel of the Kraków archbishops' house.
