Pius V
16th‑century Italian pope and Catholic saint, leading Counter‑Reformation reformer
Feast: 30 April (current Roman calendar, optional memorial) · 5 May (1962 Missal, III class)
Who they were
Antonio Michele Ghislieri became Pope as Pius V. Resolute and unbending, he fought heresy in the Counter-Reformation and had the decisions of the Council of Trent accepted in Italy, Germany, Poland and Portugal. He formed the Holy League of European states against the Ottoman threat.
Before the battle of Lepanto he asked the people of Rome to pray the Rosary; on 7 October 1571 the fleet of the Holy League defeated the Ottomans, and in thanksgiving he established that day as the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Worn out by a long illness, he died on 1 May 1572 and is buried in St Mary Major.
The miracles
The miracles examined for his causes are not described in the sources we have used.
Why that counted as sanctity
Pius V put the reforms of Trent into practice with an unbending will and trusted the Church's safety to prayer, above all the Rosary.
