Who they were
Plácido Fábrega Juliá, known in religion as Brother Bernardo, was born on 18 February 1889 at Camallera in the diocese of Girona and belonged to the Institute of the Marist Brothers of the Schools, teaching boys both doctrine and the way of life; the decree on his martyrdom says that faith and charity were the armour he used to serve God, his institute and his pupils, and that in the evil day he completed his Christian witness by shedding his blood for the love of God.
The decree gives his years as 1889 to 1934, and he was beatified by Benedict XVI among the martyrs of Spain raised to the altars in October 2007.
