Plegmund

Who they were

Plegmund, a Mercian, lived as a hermit on an island near Chester until King Alfred called him to court for his piety and learning to help in his work.

In 890 he became Archbishop of Canterbury; in 909 he consecrated seven bishops in one day to reorganise the West Saxon Church. He died in extreme old age on 2 August 914.

The Catholic Encyclopedia does not describe how he came to be honoured as a saint.
