Who they were
Poppo, of a noble Flemish family, made pilgrimages to the Holy Land and Rome. About to marry, he saw a flame burst over his head at night, took it as a light of the Holy Spirit, and in 1005 became a monk at Reims.
A disciple of the reformer Richard of St-Vannes, he became prior and abbot of many houses, restoring their discipline; Emperor Henry II made him Abbot of Stavelot. He died on 25 January 1048.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
