Who they were
Rafaela Porras y Ayllón was born at Pedro Abad near Córdoba on 1 March 1850, tenth of thirteen children of a well-off family. Her father died when she was four; untouched by worldly life, at fifteen she vowed chastity, and after her mother's death at nineteen, against her brothers' hostility, she and her sister Dolores gave themselves to nursing the sick and helping the poor.
She founded the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Later, judged to be mentally unfit, she ended her life in holiness amid suffering and penance.
