Who they were
Ralph Crockett of Cheshire, educated at Cambridge and ordained at Reims in 1585, was captured aboard ship at Littlehampton in 1586 with other priests.
After the Armada the government chose him and others for trial. Condemned for being priests, he and Edward James absolved each other and died with great constancy near Chichester on 1 October 1588.
The miracles
As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.
Why that counted as sanctity
A priest who died firm when others gave way.
