Who they were
In the monastery of Grandfelden in present-day Switzerland, Saint Germanus, abbot, who, having tried to defend with words of peace the people living around the monastery when they were attacked by a band of raiders, died together with the holy monk Randoald, stripped of his clothes and pierced with a lance.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
The Roman Martyrology remembers him on 21 February as the holy monk who died with Abbot Germanus of Grandfelden, killed while trying to defend the local people from raiders.
