Who they were
Robert, from Craven in Yorkshire, studied at Paris, was a parish priest and then a Benedictine at Whitby, before joining the founders of the Cistercian abbey of Fountains.
About 1138 he led a colony to found Newminster near Morpeth, from which three more abbeys were founded. He died on 7 June 1159, and his tomb became a place of pilgrimage.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
