Romanus of Auxerre

Who they were

A St. Romanus is honoured as Bishop of Auxerre in October. The Catholic Encyclopedia thinks he is probably the same as the Abbot Romanus who, as a monk near Subiaco early in the sixth century, helped St. Benedict and brought him bread in his solitude, and who later founded a small monastery in Gaul; his relics were afterwards taken to Auxerre.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

Honoured at Auxerre, probably the monk who helped St. Benedict at Subiaco.
