In Sweden, Saint Eskil, bishop and martyr, who, of English origin and ordained bishop by his teacher Saint Sigfrid, spared no effort to proclaim Christ among the pagans of the province of Södermanland, by whom he was then stoned.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

The Roman Martyrology remembers him on 12 June as an English-born bishop stoned by the pagans of Södermanland.
