Who they were
Gall, an Irishman, was one of the twelve who went with St Columbanus to Gaul and settled at Luxeuil. When Columbanus went on to Italy in 612, Gall stayed in Swabia and lived as a hermit near the source of the Steinach.
He refused the abbacy of Luxeuil, and died at Arbon aged ninety-five; miracles at his tomb showed his holiness, and the Abbey of St Gall grew up where he had lived.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
