Who they were
Gunther, a nobleman and cousin of St Stephen of Hungary, spent his early life in the pleasures and intrigues of court. At fifty he was converted by St Godehard and became a monk to do penance, giving his goods to the abbey of Hersfeld.
After a troubled time as an abbot, he became a hermit in the forests of Bohemia. He died at Hartmanitz on 9 October 1045.
