Saint Prisca

Who they were

Little is known for certain of St Prisca, because three different women of the name are often confused. The saint remembered is a martyr, founder of the church on the Aventine, named in a fifth-century funeral inscription now kept in the cloister of St Paul Outside the Walls.

She is distinct from Priscilla, wife of Aquila, St Paul's companion in the Acts of the Apostles, and from a martyr Prisca recorded in the catacombs of Priscilla.

The miracles

There was never a formal cause: Prisca has been honoured as a martyr of Rome since the early centuries.

Why that counted as sanctity

Prisca is honoured as a Roman martyr whose memory the Church has kept in the church that bears her name on the Aventine.
