Who they were
At Edessa in ancient Syria, the holy martyrs Gurias, an ascetic, and Samonas, who, under the emperor Diocletian, after long and cruel torments, were condemned to death by the prefect Misianus and beheaded with the sword.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
