Who they were
Sandra Sabattini was born in Riccione on 19 August 1961 into a devout family, and grew up in the rectory of her uncle, a parish priest, near Rimini. A spiritual daughter of Don Oreste Benzi and member of his Pope John XXIII Community, she served people with disabilities and addictions, and was studying medicine hoping to go to Africa to care for the sick.
On 29 April 1984, getting out of a car on her way to a community meeting at Igea Marina, she was hit by another car. She died in hospital in Bologna on 2 May 1984, aged 22. Engaged to be married, she is known as 'the holy fiancée', the first engaged woman to be beatified.
The miracles
A 40-year-old patient — Rimini, Italy — from July 2007
In July 2007 a 40-year-old was rushed into hospital in Rimini and diagnosed with a cancer where the rectum meets the colon. At surgery the cancer was found to have spread widely, and doctors believed the patient had only months to live; tests confirmed the diagnosis. After prayers to Sandra, the patient recovered.
Why that counted as sanctity
The case of a 40-year-old patient was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle on 2 October 2019, opening the way to beatification. Beatification followed on 24 October 2021 by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, for Pope Francis.
