Who they were
Saturnina Rodríguez was born in Córdoba, Argentina, in 1823. After just over ten years of marriage she was widowed, and on 29 September 1872, as Mother Catalina de María, she founded the Handmaids of the Heart of Jesus, which spread across Argentina.
She worked with St José Gabriel Brochero, the 'gaucho priest', sending sixteen of her sisters to a school he had founded. More than two hundred women had joined her community by the time she died at its motherhouse on 5 April 1896.

Why that counted as sanctity
On 1997 the Church declared that this life showed the Christian virtues to a heroic degree, and gave the title Venerable. The case of a woman was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle on 4 May 2017, opening the way to beatification. Beatification followed on 25 November 2017 by Cardinal Angelo Amato, for Pope Francis.
