Shenute

Who they were

Shenoute, a Coptic abbot, became a monk in 371 at the great White Monastery near Akhmim, ruled by his uncle, and succeeded him as abbot in 388. He accompanied St Cyril to the Council of Ephesus in 431.

He made the monastic rule stricter and introduced vows. He lived about 118 years.

The miracles

The Copts honour him as a saint and Father of the Coptic Church; the Catholic Encyclopedia does not describe his veneration in the Latin Church.
