Who they were
Stephen, of a noble Roman family, was ordained deacon by Pope Leo III and was known for his virtues. He was elected pope in June 816.
He travelled to France and crowned Emperor Louis the Pious, and brought home exiles banished under his predecessor. He died on 24 January 817 and was buried in St Peter's.

The Catholic Encyclopedia does not describe how he came to be honoured as a saint.
