Who they were
Youssef Nehmé was born at Lehfed, in the Jbeil region of Lebanon, on 8 March 1889, fourth of six children of a deeply religious Maronite family. Working in the fields and pasturing the flocks, the calm rhythm of nature became almost a hermitage for him.
As Brother Estephan, a professed monk of the Lebanese Maronite Order, he was always in love with God, whose gaze, he felt, followed him in every moment of his life.
