Symphorian and Timotheus

Who they were

Timotheus came from Antioch to Rome under Pope Miltiades and preached there fifteen months, living with the future Pope Sylvester, until the city prefect imprisoned, tortured and beheaded him in 311; a Christian woman, Theon, buried him in her garden.

Symphorian of Autun, according to a fifth-century account, was beheaded as a young man under Marcus Aurelius on 22 August 178, his mother encouraging him on the way to execution. Bishop Euphronius built a church over his grave, and he is patron of Autun.

The miracles

There was never a formal cause: both have been honoured as martyrs since the early centuries, and share the date of 22 August.

Why that counted as sanctity

A preacher who came to Rome and a young man of Gaul, strengthened by his mother, gave their lives for Christ.
