Who they were
Teofilius Matulionis was born at Kudoriškis, archdiocese of Kaunas, on 4 July 1873, to well-off farmers of deep faith; his mother died when he was four. He entered the seminary of St Petersburg in 1892 and was ordained in March 1900.
Sentenced to three years in Moscow's Butyrka and Sokolniki prisons, he returned to Leningrad as parish priest of the Sacred Heart; in December 1928, with Pius XI's consent, he was secretly made a bishop. Later Bishop of Kaišiadorys in Lithuania, he was killed in hatred of the faith in the Soviet era in 1962, aged almost ninety.
