Who they were
Teresa Demjanovich was born in Bayonne, New Jersey, on 26 March 1901, the youngest of seven children of Slovak immigrants, Alexander Demjanovich and Johanna Suchy. She entered the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, taking the name Miriam Teresa, and lived an intense spiritual life.
She died at only 26, on 8 May 1927, in Elizabeth, New Jersey. She was the first Blessed born and raised in twentieth-century America.
The miracles
A young American boy — New York State, USA — 1960s
A small boy at kindergarten began to lose his sight and was diagnosed with congenital macular degeneration in both eyes; he went blind quickly, and the state was about to assign him a tutor for the blind. The sisters at his school, who were working on Sister Miriam Teresa's cause, gave him a holy card with a small relic of her, and his sight began to return. Doctors had given up all hope.
She was beatified in the United States on 4 October 2014; Pope Francis gave thanks for her at the Angelus the next day. One more approved miracle is needed for canonisation.
Why that counted as sanctity
The case of a young American boy was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle on 17 December 2013, opening the way to beatification. Beatification followed on 4 October 2014 by Cardinal Angelo Amato, for Pope Francis.
