Who they were
Teodor Romzha was born at Velykyi Bychkiv, in Transcarpathia, on 14 April 1911, son of a railway worker. Ordained at Christmas 1936, he taught philosophy at Uzhhorod and on 24 September 1944 was consecrated bishop of the Greek Catholic eparchy of Mukachevo.
He refused to renounce union with the Holy See and prepared his clergy not to yield; priests were arrested and churches handed to the Orthodox. Convalescing in the Mukachevo hospital, he was poisoned on 1 November 1947 by the state police.
