Theodoret

Who they were

Theodoret, dedicated to God from birth by his mother's vow, was raised by monks, gave his inheritance to the poor at twenty-three and became a monk. Against his will he was made Bishop of Cyrus about 423, and brought many pagans and heretics into the Church.

In the Nestorian controversy he at first opposed St Cyril. Deposed by the Robber Council, he appealed to Pope Leo, who declared his deposition invalid. He died about 457.

The Catholic Encyclopedia does not describe how he came to be honoured as a saint.

Why that counted as sanctity

A learned monk-bishop who gave his wealth to the poor.
