Who they were
Thomas of Celano was one of the first disciples of St Francis, joining about 1215. He went to Germany and governed its province for a time, then lived in close company with St Francis.
After Francis's canonisation he wrote his First and Second Lives, and a treatise on his miracles. He died about 1255.
