Who they were
Thomas Pilchard of Battle, a fellow of Balliol College, Oxford, was ordained in 1583. Arrested and banished, he returned almost at once.
Imprisoned at Dorchester in 1587, he converted thirty people in the fortnight before his condemnation. He was executed with great cruelty on 21 March 1587; a fellow priest said there was not a priest in the West of England his equal in virtue.
